Objective
Observe how the Japanese government researches, writes, teaches, and preserves military history, particularly through its military educational institutions. Examine how history education influences the Japanese military at all levels, from new recruits to senior military and civilian defense leaders. Identify areas for future U.S.-Japan cooperation on military history education and preservation, particularly by strengthening the U.S. Army Center of Military History’s (CMH) relationships with Japanese government agencies. Upon return, develop CMH resources on U.S. Army history topics related to Japan.
