MFP No. 20 Fellows Near End of Fellowship Year
Members of the twentieth group of Mansfield Fellows are nearing the end of their Fellowship year in Japan. Late last month Jeffrey Deane (Japan Country Program Director, United States Navy) was honored at two farewell ceremonies upon completing his placement at the Maritime Staff Office (MSO), Ministry of Defense. Rear Admiral Saeki headed one of the ceremonies and presented Mr. Deane with a plaque and an official certificate of appreciation (pictured above).
Several Mansfield Fellows from the twentieth group also joined senior congressional staff visiting from Washington and staff from Japan’s National Diet for a dinner in Tokyo earlier this month. The Senior Congressional Staff Study Tour to Japan was organized by The Congressional Study Group on Japan in cooperation with Sasakawa USA. Mansfield Fellow John Wright (U.S. Air Force) wrote about the strategic benefits of national apologies in “‘Strategic Forgiveness’: Lessons for East Asia,” published in The Diplomat June 10.
