Compensation and Benefits
Detailees (Agency-funded): Fellows who are detailees receive salary and benefits (including health care coverage) through the sponsoring federal agency during the program.
Non-Detailees (Program-funded): Fellows from the legislative and judicial branches participate as non-detailees.
Allowances
Allowances of the Mansfield Fellowships are subject to the level of annual Congressional appropriations. U.S. agencies may contribute to the Fellows’ allowances.
The following allowances are provided to partially offset the higher cost of living in Japan:
- A general program allowance to partially offset the cost of housing arranged by the Mansfield Foundation.
- A dependent adjustment to assist with living costs in Japan.
- An education allowance to help parents provide children with educational services ordinarily provided without charge by U.S. public schools (kindergarten through twelfth grade).
- Round-trip, economy-class airline transportation on an American carrier for each Fellow and his or her immediate family members (spouse/children only) who live in Japan for at least six months.
