Mansfield Fellow Discusses U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Policies in Tokyo
March 7, 2019
On March 5, Mansfield Fellow Tony Nakanishi spoke in Tokyo about nuclear regulatory policies in the United States. Nakanishi, a risk analyst for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s Office of New Reactors, provided an overview of risk-informed, performance based regulations and reactor oversight in the United States, discussing how these processes have benefited the public, nuclear plant operators, and regulators. As a member of USNRC’s initial response team to the Fukushima Dai-ichi accident, Mr. Nakanishi briefly discussed his personal experiences from 2011.
On Friday, March 22, Mansfield Fellow Ian Morrison (National Weather Service) will discuss how natural disasters are forcing evolution within weather agencies. The GRIPS-Mansfield joint seminar will review the responsibilities of national weather agencies, describe how U.S. and Japan agencies are changing their strategies, and examine the results thus far.
